  Lone Ridge German Shorthaired Pointers

The German Shorthaired Pointer is a versatile hunting dog, capable of excellent performance both in the field and in water. They are aristocratic and well balanced with a look of intelligence and animation. Their clean-cut head, sloping shoulder, deep chest, powerful back, and strong quarters indicates the power, endurance, and agility the GSP possesses. The GSP is friendly, intelligent, and willing to please. They are enthusiastic for work without over excitement and neither nervous nor flighty.

The GSP descended from the old Spanish Pointer which was imported to Germany in the 1600’s. Here the breed developed through introduction of the schweisshund, the Foxhound, Various French hounds, some Scandinavian breeds, the German Bird Dog, and the Italian Pointer. The first studbook for GSPs was not created until 1870 at which time breeders incorporated the English Pointer to add style and run to create the GSP’s all round versatility. The strong selection for function before form is credited to making the breed what it is today.
